Iwork 2013

Feb 27, 2014 Apple iWork 2013 represents the biggest update to this popular productivity suite in recent years. This version brings a unified interface and features set to OS X and iOS, allowing you to work across all platforms without compromising efficiency.

  1. Apple's iWork productivity suite has never been a world beater. Pitted against the near-omnipresent Microsoft Office and Google’s free web-based solutions and only available on Apple products.
  2. Oct 28, 2012 iWork, Apple's productivity suite, is the easiest way to create great-looking documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Writing and page layout are easy using Pages.

With the October 2013 iWork update, the new UI is great but it seems one cannot store documents as 'flat file' any more. This really limits my ability to store the files, essentially ruling self-hosted version control (git, hg etc.) out of the picture.

The problem is:

  • adding a new picture to a document creates a new file within the bundle, which should be explicitly added to the version control

  • removing pictures removes them from the bundle but – again – version control should be notified.

I tried the trick of zipping the bundle and renaming it back to '.pages' (the way iWork'09 handled flat files) but it does not work.

Has anyone else been bit by this – do you have work-arounds (other than using iCloud, Dropbox – I'm fine with some of the documents living there but for some others I'd like to keep closer to my chest)?

Workarounds can be either on the iWork side, or ways that I get i.e. 'hg' (Mercurial) to version the bundle directories nicely.

As the SO item says, I solved this by hg addremove. Other suggestions and discussion are still welcome. 🙂

Apple released new versions of its iWork apps for OS X Mavericks this November, making it a free download for all new Macs purchased on or after October 1, 2013. However, Hackintosh users will have no such luck taking advantage of this update-- new Hackintoshes are not recognized by the Mac App Store as new Macs, and if you want the newest versions of Pages, Numbers, or Keynote, you're officially required to pay the full $60 price. Fortunately, there is a workaround!
Instructions
For this method to work, you will need a Hackintosh running OS X Mavericks, since only Mavericks is eligible for the iWork free update program. This method also works for real Macs that didn't qualify for the free update program. If your Hackintosh already has a retail copy of iWork installed, it's unclear whether this method will still work-- feel free to share your experiences in the comments.
